For today’s ride we’ll check out of our Chester lodging and drive to Mineral, the gateway to Lassen Volcanic National Park. From Mineral we will climb the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway to its summit on the shoulder of Lassen Peak. On this fabulous ride, near the summit we’ll be riding on roads lined with snowbanks up to 7 feet high and it’s possible the road will be closed to vehicles but open for bikes (depends on the snow year). There is a nice NPS visitor center with a café about half way up the climb – we’ll stop there for lunch on the way back down (bring or buy). B riders skip the first 4 miles of the climb (and a busier section of road) by starting at the park road junction. D route adds an extra loop through Mill Creek on the way back to Mineral. NOTE: If you don’t have a NPS Pass, the charge to enter the park is $15.00 per bicycle (no cash - credit card only!), however 4 riders can enter together free for each annual NPS pass. If you need to buy a vehicle pass (valid for 7 days) for the next day that would be cheaper than buying a bike pass and a vehicle pass on successive days.

CD START: Meet at 9:15 for a 9:30 departure at Lassen Mineral Lodge (33348 Hwy 36 East, Mineral, CA.). Park on the left side of the parking area away from the main building. Estimated 35 minute drive from Chester, but plan for construction delays!
B START: Meet at 9:30 for a 9:45 departure at the junction of Highway 36 and the Lassen Scenic Byway (Hwy 89). Lots of roadside parking at/near the junction – make sure your vehicle is off roadway. Estimated 35 minute drive from Chester, but plan for construction delays!
