UPDATE 5/10/26
We've made changes to the ride schedule in Chester, adding participation in the Mile High 100 Century . The Mile High 100 is a fundraiser for the Almanor Recreation and Parks District (ARPD) , a public entity which raises funds and grants to provide recreational opportunities in the Chester area, including the bike path around Lake Almanor. It has one part time employee but otherwise runs with volunteer board members/staff. This event is strongly supported in the community by local businesses/civic organizations and all proceeds from the event go directly to ARPD for recreation projects!
To accommodate participation in the Saturday Mile High 100, we've moved our "day off" to Sunday and the Warner Valley/Juniper Lake ride to Monday . (No change needed to accommodation arrangements.)
The Mile High 100 requires paid registration (currently $85-100). Registration includes a fully supported ride with 2-3 rest stops, T-shirt, finish line celebration with craft beer/music and catered buffet meal provided by a local restaurant. The Mile High 100 is a relatively easy route (33 miles/1000'/ 68 miles/2500'/ 102 miles/4000'), including out-n-back extensions. Mindy and I have registered for the Metric Century , (~68 miles) but plan to do an abbreviated ~54 mile route with about 2000' of climbing. We'll lead a C/C- group - starting time TBD. REGISTRATION LINK When you register, enter "WESTERN WHEELERS" for team name and "westernwheelers.org" for website. (NOTE: Prices go up by $10 on Friday May 15th at 11 pm.)
For anyone who does not want to register/ride on Saturday, the event is also looking for volunteers . We will not have a WWBC ride on Sunday, but riders are welcome to tackle the ride around the lake on their own.
NORTHERN SIERRA – MILE HIGH 100 CENTURY
There are 3 registration options for the Mile High 100 (33/68/102 miles). Mindy and Guy will be leading a C/C- group doing the Metric Century but turning around before the end of the northern extension. Expect a ride of about 45-54 miles/2000' of climbing. This ride proceeds east through forested roads to the Westwood Rest Stop, then north into Lassen National Forest. After returning for a second stop at the Westwood Rest Stop, the ride circumnavigates Almanor Lake, including great lake views and a rest stop at the southern end of the lake.
Along the route we can expect to see bald eagles and osprey and some great lake views. Almanor Lake was named by dam builder Guy Earl in 1927 after his three daughters ALice, MArtha, and eleaNOR. Registration includes fully supported ride with rest stops, T-shirt, and finish line celebration with food/beer and music.
